METHODOLOGY and PHILOSOPHY
I practice child-led therapy. This means I will always let the child take the lead. I will always respect where they are in terms of regulation, and I will always make sure that I am getting their consent in all that we do. We won’t be compliance based at all. I do this for a number of reasons. I truly believe that a person needs to feel safe and respected in order to learn and grow. I also feel that a person needs to be in relationship with me in order for me to help them. I will spend a lot of time building rapport with the child so that they can feel like I am a safe person. That might mean that we sit in silence for some time. This is very intentional as it allows me and the child time to learn each other’s boundaries.
I practice neurodiversity affirming therapy. This means that I will listen to the voices of autistic people and others who are neurodivergent. I will embrace and celebrate neurodiversity, and I will not focus any energy on neurotypical standards. I am forever learning from the neurodivergent community and welcome conversations on how I can improve my cultural sensitive practices. I understand that the neurodivergent community is a varied population, and I will always seek to learn from a broad range of people in this community.
I work within the framework of the family culture. I will take into consideration your family and all of my recommendations are meant to be accessible to your specific family. If something that I recommend does not work for your family, I will always try to offer an alternative.
